About

Moving Voices is an award-winning oral history project that brings attention to the experiences of Vietnamese-Americans in and around Louisville, Ky.  The mission of Moving Voices is to collect, preserve, and share the Vietnamese-American perspective through storytelling for the benefit of the public, academia, and future generations.

Moving Voices started in 2009 as an idea of Ms. Van Tran, a Louisville businesswoman and Vietnamese refugee.  With the help of Crane House, Asia Institute, several young Vietnamese Americans, and a grant from Metro Louisville Government, Moving Voices became the first oral history project focused exclusively on an Asian community in Kentucky.

From 2009-2011, Moving Voices successfully collected untold stories about the Vietnam War from Vietnamese-American and American veterans, refugees, and Amerasians (mixed race).  In 2014, Moving Voices began its current partnership with The Vietnamese Community of Louisville, Inc., a non-profit organization, to launch a new chapter called "Discovering Our Community."

Moving Voices has been showcased to the public to extremely positive reception across the State. In 2011, the Kentucky Historical Society recognized Moving Voices with the coveted Kentucky History AwardMoving Voices has also received media coverage in the LEO Weekly, The Courier Journal, and Associated Press
